Good afternoon, family!
What have you learned about God today?
25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
In John 6 there’s a whole crowd of people following Jesus around the Sea of Galilea (6:22-24). Jesus was the pied piper of people with problems. Only, the crowd following him around Galilea were doing so for the wrong reasons. Jesus calls out their false motives in 6:25-34. In short, the people had their minds set on earth but Jesus wants them to think Heavenly things. Let me show you a few ways he challenges them in the passage.
1. They were looking for a show but needed a signs of salvation- V. 26af Jesus means that the people were following him for a show (the signs). He fed the 5,000 men in the preceding passage and now the Galilean people were stalking him everywhere he went. They should’ve seen Jesus as Messiah, but looking through earthly eyes, they only saw him as a miracle worker. How often do we want Jesus as our wonder-worker alone and fail to love him and obey him as Lord?
2. They wanted full-bellies when they should’ve wanted bread of life- V. 26g Jesus said they were interested in him because he could feed them. He offered them something they needed. If he could create food for a multitude of people, surely he could increase their bank accounts, give them a good harvest, and maybe even give them healthy children. Jesus offers us more than circumstantial sustenance. He offers us himself.
3. They labored in worldly work without efforts of faith- Vv. 27-29 Jesus corrects their perspectives and pursuits. Since their minds were on earthly things they were concerned with earthly endeavors. He corrects the order of their work. They were working for their religion. Jesus proposed a system where their works are because of their religion. When we live faithfully, we prove our faith. So, if our belief in Christ it will be demonstrated in our behavior. We work for God because he has worked belief into our hearts. We are faithful because he gave faith. This gift of God leads to efforts for God.
